The government is working on bringing Low Taek Jho back to the country as soon as possible, although it is an arduous process to do so, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

According to Anwar, negotiations have been carried out with several countries to extradite the fugitive businessperson, better known as Jho Low, to face the music in connection with the 1MDB scandal.

“Of course, yes. That has been the position and we have been very tough from day one,” he told reporters when asked about the government’s stance on Low’s extradition to Malaysia.

Anwar, however, did not name the countries Putrajaya has engaged with on the matter.

The prime minister was speaking to reporters after attending the Malaysian Red Crescent Society’s anniversary at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, today.

Several countries

Previously, former Wall Street Journal journalist Bradley Hope reported that Malaysian government officials were working on a deal with China on Low’s extradition.

According to Hope, the co-author of ‘Billion Dollar Whale’, negotiations on the matter were hammered out after Anwar’s visit to the republic last March.

Today, Anwar refused to divulge whether China was one of the countries involved in the talks.

“It involves several countries, intelligence, Interpol, and others.

“The countries are cooperating. The countries I have dealt with support (the move),” he said.

Previously, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that the Interpol Red Notice issued against Low, and five others involved in the 1MDB scandal, is still active.
